IOS is now searching for a
Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d)
(part-time, 65%) in History,
starting April 1, 2024
in the newly approved project “Reordering Yugoslavia, Rethinking Europe: A Transregional History of the Yugoslav Wars and the Post-Cold War Order (1991–1995)”. The project will be funded by the Leibniz Association. IOS is one of the project partners, together with the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History Munich-Berlin (coordinator), and the Chair of Southeast European History at Humboldt University Berlin.
Remuneration is based on the German TV-L public pay scale (up to TVL E13), 65% part-time. The appointment is for 36 months.
The doctoral researcher will specifically do research on the sub-project carried out by IOS on “Making Its Way toward Europe by Distancing Itself from the Balkans? Czechoslovakia, Its Successor States, and the Yugoslav Wars”. This sub-project explores Czechoslovak, and Czech and Slovak respectively, perceptions of the Yugoslav crisis and wars, and the impact of these perceptions on political debates about the development and eventual dissolution of Czechoslovakia and the route of the Czech Republic and Slovakia into the EU. In its analysis, the project addresses political actors and media discourses. The successful candidate will pursue a PhD project on the themes of the IOS work package.
Your tasks:
- Conducting original research in the framework of the project
- Finishing a dissertation manuscript
- Contributing to the project’s dissemination and communication activities
- Publication of academic articles
- Presentation of the research to academic and non-academic audiences
- Data collection and processing
- Participation in joint project activities, such as workshops
We expect from you:
- An excellent Master’s degree (or equivalent) in history or a cognate discipline
- Experience of empirical research, ideally in the field of East Central European History
- Knowledge of Czech and Slovak, proficiency in English; preferable also knowledge of German
- Interest in multidisciplinary cooperation
- Good communications skills, flexibility, reliability, team spirit
